Leadership and collaboration for economic innovation and inclusive growth

A learning event was held in the Western Cape on 4 and 5 March 2013. There was also a sub-focus of Green Economic development. The event started on 04 March 2013 with an evening Jazz and Economic Development improv session at the Mahogany Lounge hosted by the Western Cape Economic Development Partnership. On 05 March 2013, there was a leadership input entitled "Building a regional economic development platform: exploring challenges and opportunities". This was designed to allow members to connect creatively on an individual level and with each other. Thereafter there were presentations on regional competitiveness and its measurement.

This included: Regional Economic Development: What it means and how it is defined; measuring regional competitiveness and the Cities Support Programme and cost of doing business survey and Competitiveness: Definitions, tools and strategies. Thereafter there was a world café session to build on inputs on the themes of: Regional Economic Development definition and pilot, Cities Support Programme, Clustering and Value Chains and Indicators. The meeting was recorded by a graphic facilitator, who graphically depicted the events as they unfolded. This allowed for the complexity of content to be held in a creative manner. That evening, the Head of Department: Western Cape Economic Development and Tourism Department opened a networking event. Short addresses were given by private sector speakers on the Green Economy and the role of the public sector as well as Green economy hindrances. Day two kicked off with a site visit to the iShack project in Stellenbosch. Thereafter the Sustainability Institute hosted members for discussions on "Regional Innovation and Universities" and the "SID approach".
