Youth Skills Development and Employment Creation

When: Tuesday 23 August 2016 - Wednesday 24 August 2016
Where: East London Industrial Development Zone Conference Centre, East London

The Economies of Regions Learning Network and Jobs Fund, in association with REDI3X3 and the Poverty and Inequality Initiative, is hosting a two-day workshop on 23 and 24 August 2016 in East London in order to deepen partner understanding about approaches to youth skills development and job creation and to inspire city and regional economic stakeholders to action.

Persistent high levels of unemployment, partiularly youth unemployment, is one of the most important economic development challenges facing South Africa today.  More than a quarter of the labour force are out of work and most of this unemployment is long-term. Significantly, young people bear the brunt facing higher levels of unemployment than other age cohorts.  In addition, the unemployment rate for females is higher than for males, a consistent trend across the different age cohorts. With a youth unemployment rate that is amongst the highest in the world, finding pathways to employment is critical to transforming South Africa’s future employment and growth trajectory.

The purpose of the event is:

  • To highlight the challenges of the youth skills and employment challenge for regional economic stakeholders;
  • To showcase positive examples of regional partnership action;
  • To inspire regional stakeholders to develop innovative regional collaborations to address the challenge of youth skills development and employment;
  • To identify the support cities and region require from national government and from research agencies to engage more effectively around youth skills and employment.

There is no workshop fee to attend Economies of Regions Learning Network workshops, however delegates are expected to fund their own travel, accommodation and local transport.
