Technical Working Group on Metropolitan Economic Data

When: Wednesday 04 November 2015 - Wednesday 04 November 2015
Where: ,

The Technical Working Group (TWG) on Metropolitan Economic Data comprises of representatives of metropolitan municipalities, National Treasury, Stats SA, SARS, Department of Labour, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation, South African Cities Network, South African Local government Association and others. It was established with the support of the Minister of Finance as an inter-governmental process to generate meaningful sub-metropolitan firm level information about employment and economic activity for purposes of metropolitan and regional economic analysis.

Economic development centered on South Africa’s key city regions plays a central role in stimulating, supporting and enhancing economic development in South Africa. Working within the strategic direction set by Government’s economic development and job creation agenda, regional and city-region economic development approaches and strategies are critical to national economic success. Such approaches and strategies however require accurate economic data about key metropolitan and sub-metropolitan market, sectoral and employment trends in order that government interventions can be based on evidence and spatially and sectorally optimized.

The purpose of this meeting was to:

  • Update on project status
  • Focus on progressing projects that will yield data about jobs and firms
  • Agree next steps

Presentations can be found in the Knowledge Center under TWG docs.
